The Kalpa Tree was said to be
the ultimate gift to the gods in Hindu poetry.
This was a tree covered in gemstones, with leaves
of Zircon.
Zircon has been thought to aid sleep, promote
honor and wisdom, and bring prosperity. The Persian
word “zargun” means gold-colored,
and is whence the name ‘Zircon’ sprang.
Zircon is not to be confused with Cubic Zirconia,
the laboratory-grown diamond imitation. Zircon
is a beautiful natural gemstone available in a
wide range of colors. The colorless variety, though,
is popular for its brilliance and dispersion.
Zircon is also available in green, dark red, yellow,
brown, and orange. Today the most popular color
is blue zircon. Most blue Zircon, which is considered
an alternate birthstone for December, is a pastel
blue, but some exceptional gems have a bright
blue color.
Zircon is mined in Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Thailand,
Myanmar, Australia, and other countries.
Zircon is one of the heaviest gemstones, which
means that it will look smaller than other varieties
of the same weight. Although Zircon is relatively
hard, it can abrade and facets can chip. Zircon
jewelry should thus be stored carefully. Dealers
often wrap Zircons in individual strands of paper
so that they will not hit against each other in
a package.
